NORDSTROM BEAUTY FORECAST: LIGHTER, BRIGHTER SPRING 2001 MAKEUP ESSENTIALS
SEATTLE, Wash. - Feb. 5, 2001 - The basics of beauty don’t change much for spring—good news for those who’ve perfected the polished, feminine face that continues to look current. What’s new are the little touches that lighten and brighten warm-weather looks: flirty, attention-getting eyes with touches of quirky color, just-been-to-the-beach cheeks and high-gloss pouts in pure pigments. Nordstrom National Beauty Director Debbi Hartley has edited the market for an A-list of beauty updates sure to be in the season’s most savvy cosmetic bags.
A lightweight foundation with just enough coverage to even the complexion. Try: Esteé Lauder Equalizer Makeup, $32.50.
A great concealer, worn only where necessary. Try: Bobbi Brown Concealer Kit, $35; or Laura Mercier Secret Camoflauge concealer, $26. For off hours, Hartley says those who dare to bare might try using concealer only to cover imperfections, evening out complexion with a dusting of sheer powder instead.
A pearlized highlighter blended over foundation for a subtly sexy sheen. Try: Paula Dorf Face Tint in Jet Glow, $34.
Natural, sheer tints for cheeks and lips are the perfect complement for spring’s cleaned-up, neo-preppy fashions. Try: Lorac’s new Sheer Wash in four nearly clear shades: Ecstasy, Emotion, Magic and Rapture (lovely tints that range from rose to plum), $24.
Lighter makeup renews the emphasis on great-face fundamentals, making groomed, but not thin brows a key investment. Try: The newest home-maintenance brow kit from "Brow Queen" Anastasia, which contains everything needed for maintaining the perfect arch, $125.
Iridescent eye shadows in quirky colors. Try: Urban Decay Liquid Metal Eye Color in Mercury, Xenon or Palladium, $22; Hard Candy Eyeshadow Loner in Plush, Star or Girly, $15; and Tony & Tina Universal Color Dust in Pleiadian, Dolphin Star or Andromeda, $15.
A touch of all-over body shimmer is sexy as clothing gets barer, especially when it’s lightly tinted and scented in a deliciously feminine way. Try: Stila Flaunt Body Shimmer in Green Tea, Jasmine, Violet or Gardenia, $45.
Spring runway looks played up lips with high shine in pure pigment vs. browned-down reds or pale pinks. Try: MAC Laquer—revved-up lipgloss in make-no-mistake-about-it Pink, Coral or Bright Red, $15.
A nude-but-finished lip is a great choice for casual looks or to balance the season’s colorful eye options. Try: Lancôme Rouge Absolu lipstick in Confident, $18.50; Calvin Klein lipstick in Iris, $16; or Stila Lip Shine in Nude, $17.
Dramatic, flirty eyes are one of the season’s strongest beauty statements. To create the look, start with the essentials—an eyelash curler and serious mascara. Try: Shiseido’s Eyelash Curler ($14.50) is one of the best, and CHANEL’s Drama Lash Maximum Wear waterproof mascara adds volume as it separates. Available in black, brown and fun new spring-inspired shades of Ocean and Jade, $21.
Fragrance Notes
Nordstrom Fragrance Director Tracy Aschenbrenner recommends two new scents to match the mood of the season:
The latest from Bijan is a standout in spring’s hottest scent category, floral-orientals. 1.7 oz. eau de parfum, $65.
From the ever-innovative Helmut Lang comes a fragrance that breaks the boundaries of the traditional top/middle/base note formula, capturing instead a ‘skin accord’ that allows it to develop with each individual’s body heat into a scent that smells unique on every person who wears it. An ideal choice for those who covet their own signature fragrance. 3.3 oz. eau de parfum, $80; 3.3 oz. eau de cologne, $60.
Customers can visit the cosmetics department of the nearest Nordstrom to check out these and other new spring finds and enjoy a complimentary makeup lesson, or shop through the Nordstrom Beauty Hotline at 1-800-7-BEAUTY.
